Description: May 14th – July 5th, 2008
Artist Receptions and Third Friday Towles Court Artwalks
Friday May 16th, 2008 6-10 pm
Friday June 20th, 2008 6-10 pm
This exhibition features new work by photographer Diana Lucas Leavengood inspired by the Holt, Rhinehart and Winston series “Rivers of America”. Leavengood’s new series American River began by exposing various legs of the Hillsborough River, which runs into Tampa Bay from its source in the Green Swamp. The river is rich in history and wildlife. Her desire was to visually connect the city of Tampa with its major water source. The images may seem random yet they are planned out and executed with meticulous attention to subject matter and framing. They are created entirely inside a Pentax K1000 on 35mm film over a period of time ranging from a few moments to one year. Over the course of the project, she was able to travel in an 8,000-mile loop through the interior of the United States. Iconic images and places from her travels have been incorporated into the river scenes creating not only double exposures but in some cases quadruple exposures.

Description: Artist Receptions and Third Friday
Towles Court Art Walks July 18, August 15, September 19, 2008 6-10 pm
The Katharine Butler Gallery's Summer Exhibit pulls together the highlights of the 2008 season with artwork by all 16 gallery artists. Howard Cowdrick shows basic geometric forms embellished with his unique use of light, atmosphere and vivid color. Ruth Dwyer’s abstract oil landscapes present a counterpoint to pastel artist Ruth Höök-Colby’s realistic look at nature. Norine Zapata explores nature through her 3D flower fields on Plexiglas, while her husband, David Zapata, reveals his magical point of view through his signature botanical photography. Visual poetry is seen in photographer Diana Lucas Leavengood’s multiple exposed images. Artist/owner Katharine Butler’s etchings and paintings refer to the sea, encouraging the viewer’s personal interpretation. Other gallery favorites include fabric artist L. Susan Stark, mixed media artist Joan Lyon, sculptor Ronn Mattia, and potter Charlie Barmonde. In addition, the gallery carries elegant glass art, ceramics and unique, hand-made jewelry by acclaimed bead artist Sharyn Wolf. The gallery continues to offer its art rental and interior designer programs, as well as gift certificates.
